We’re seeing an interesting trend in luxury matchmaking: people are talking themselves out of great dates before they ever happen.
Here’s how it usually goes.
Your matchmaker calls. We tell you about someone we think could be a great fit. You’re interested. They’re interested. You both say yes.
The first date is scheduled.
And then… you become a private detective.
You find their Instagram. Then LinkedIn. Maybe Facebook.
You scroll back years.
You see a photo with an ex. An unflattering video. A vacation that makes you wonder about their lifestyle. You analyze who they follow, where they spend their time, and what their posts might say about them.
Suddenly, you’ve created an entire story about someone you have never actually met.
And now you want to cancel the date.
This happens more often than you might think.

One of the advantages of working with a professional matchmaker is having another human being in the process who can remind you of something incredibly important:
You haven’t met them yet.
A social media profile is not a first date.
A photograph is not chemistry.
An old post is not a personality.
And your interpretation of someone’s digital footprint may have very little to do with how you’ll feel sitting across from them at dinner.
In our years of private matchmaking, we’ve talked many clients back into dates they were considering canceling based solely on something they discovered online.
And we’ve heard some version of this afterward more times than we can count:
“I can’t believe I almost canceled.”
Dating apps and social media have trained singles to believe they need enormous amounts of information before deciding whether someone deserves an hour of their time.
But more information doesn’t always lead to better dating decisions.
Sometimes it simply gives you more opportunities to eliminate someone.
That’s one reason luxury matchmaking services work differently.
At Cinqe, our matchmakers get to know people beyond a handful of photographs and a social media profile. We make thoughtful introductions and encourage our clients to evaluate chemistry where it actually happens: in person.
The same principle applies when a trusted friend sets you up. Someone who knows both of you sees potential that you may not be able to identify through an Instagram search.
Give that introduction a chance.

Of course, there are legitimate reasons to cancel a date. If you discover something significant involving your safety, values, relationship status, or a true dealbreaker, pay attention.
But an awkward photograph?
An old picture with an ex?
A video where they don’t look their best?
A social media account that isn’t exactly what you imagined?
Those things may tell you very little about whether you’ll have chemistry in person.
The entire purpose of a first date is to find out.
Ask the questions yourself. Hear the stories directly from them. Notice how they treat you, the waiter, and the people around them. See whether you laugh. See whether conversation flows.
Meet the person—not the profile.
And if you’re currently debating whether to cancel a date with someone you haven’t even met because of something you found online, our advice as professional matchmakers is simple:
Go anyway.
Let the world surprise you.
