Local Matchmaker vs. Nationwide Matchmaker: What I Learned After Building Both

By Erica Arrechea, Founder of Cinqe Matchmaking

For the first few years of my career, I was proudly a local matchmaker.

When I founded my company in 2010, I focused almost exclusively on Orange County, Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco. I knew the restaurants. I knew the neighborhoods. I knew where professionals spent their weekends, which country clubs people belonged to, and which communities attracted successful singles.

It seemed like exactly what a matchmaking company should be.

And for a while, it worked.

But after several years, I realized something important.

The challenge wasn’t finding paying clients.

The challenge was building an extraordinary database.

That realization completely changed my business—and ultimately led to Cinqe becoming one of the largest luxury matchmaking firms in North America.

Being Local Has Real Advantages

I want to be fair because matchmakers who live and work locally provide tremendous value.

A great local matchmaker often knows:

  • The best places to meet people.
  • The personality of different neighborhoods.
  • Local culture and lifestyles.
  • Which careers dominate the area.
  • Community events and social circles.

For many singles, especially those who know they’ll never relocate, they don't have many dealbreakers, a local matchmaker can absolutely be the right choice.

I spent years doing exactly that.

The Problem I Didn’t Expect

What surprised me wasn’t the client side.

It was the candidate side.

The most extremely attractive, wildly successful and emotionally healthy people rarely wake up thinking,

“I need to join my local matchmakers database.”

Instead, they wonder:

  • Is this local matchmaker well respected?
  • What opportunities will this membership create?
  • Who will I have access to?
  • Is this one of the BEST networks?
  • Will I meet people I couldn’t meet on my own?

That perception matters.

As my company remained focused on one geographic area, I realized something fascinating ...

Many exceptional singles assumed our network would also be small.

Not because it actually was.

Because that’s simply what “local” communicates.

Great Candidates Want GREAT Networks

One lesson I’ve learned after introducing thousands of successful singles is this:

People who have options usually want access to other people who also have options.

Successful professionals often travel.

Executives relocate.

Entrepreneurs split time between multiple cities.

Doctors accept positions across the country.

Investors own homes in different states.

Business owners frequently travel internationally.

They don’t necessarily think about dating as something limited to one ZIP code.

They think bigger.

Once I understood that, everything changed.

Our Turning Point

In 2014, I made one of the biggest decisions of my career.

Instead of remaining a California matchmaking company, we expanded.

First throughout the entire West Coast...

Like Vancouver BC.

Then New York.

Then Florida.

Then Texas.

Eventually we expanded into major cities throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe and the Middle East.

It wasn’t because I wanted to become “bigger.”

It was because I wanted access to better people.

Ironically, expanding nationally helped us become a stronger local matchmaker everywhere we worked.

Why Expansion Improved Our Results

The larger our network became, the easier it became to recruit remarkable people.

Someone in Denver became interested because they saw members in New York.

Someone in Miami joined because they noticed clients in California.

Someone in London appreciated that introductions weren’t limited to one city.

Many people weren’t necessarily looking to relocate.

They simply wanted access to a respected network.

That perception changed everything.

Bigger Doesn’t Mean Less Personal

One misconception is that nationwide matchmaking companies become impersonal.

That certainly can happen.

But it doesn’t have to.

At Cinqe, every search is still handled personally.

Our clients know their matchmakers.

We spend hours getting to know each client before making introductions.

We discuss personality, communication style, family goals, values, lifestyle, and long-term compatibility.

Technology helps us stay organized.

Relationships are still built by people.

A Trusted Network Beats a Local Address

Many people assume that because a matchmaker lives in the same city or market, they’ll automatically have a stronger network. That’s not necessarily true.

What matters most isn’t where the matchmaker lives - it’s who chooses to join their network.

A local matchmaker might meet someone at a coffee shop who happens to be a great fit. But there’s something incredibly valuable about introducing you to someone who intentionally joined a matchmaking network because they’re genuinely serious about finding a lasting relationship. These aren’t random encounters. They’re people who have taken the time to raise their hand and say, “I’m ready to meet someone.”

The strongest matchmaking networks are built with people who are intentional. They invest time in creating a thoughtful profile, speaking with a matchmaker, and actively participating in the process because they’re committed to finding love.

That’s why bigger isn’t always better, and local isn’t always better either. The real advantage comes from a trusted brand that has spent years building credibility, attracting exceptional singles, and earning the confidence of people who are truly relationship-minded. A strong reputation attracts serious candidates .. and those are the introductions that often lead to the best relationships.

A Strong Network Benefits Everyone

The reality is that not every perfect match lives twenty minutes away.

Sometimes they do.

Sometimes they live across town.

Sometimes they’re in another city.

Sometimes they relocate.

Sometimes they already split their time between homes.

The larger and healthier the network becomes, the greater the likelihood of finding someone who truly fits ..... not simply someone who happens to live nearby.

Local Knowledge Still Matters

Even though Cinqe works nationally and internationally, we still believe local expertise is incredibly important.

Our team understands regional dating cultures.

Dating in Orange County is different from dating in Manhattan.

Miami is different from Denver.

Dallas is different from San Francisco.

Sydney is different from London.

Understanding those differences allows us to better prepare clients before introductions.

It’s one of the reasons we have matchmakers with experience across multiple regions rather than relying on one person to understand every market.

Which Type of Matchmaker Is Right for You?

If your goals are modest, you’re committed to staying in one city forever, and you’re simply looking for introductions nearby, a talented local matchmaker may be an excellent choice.

However, if you’re looking for exceptional people, greater privacy, broader opportunities, and access to a deeper network of accomplished attractive singles, a nationwide matchmaking firm may offer meaningful advantages.

There isn’t one right answer for everyone.

The best choice depends on your goals.

Looking Back

When I started my company, I genuinely believed staying local was the best way to serve my clients.

Looking back, I’m grateful I was wrong.

Expanding beyond California didn’t make us less personal.

It made us stronger.

It gave us access to extraordinary people I never would have met otherwise.

It helped us recruit candidates from around the world.

And perhaps most importantly, it allowed us to provide better opportunities for the very community where I first began.

Sometimes the best way to serve your hometown…

is to stop thinking only about your hometown.
